A CRPF Central Reserve Police Force officer allegedly shot dead two of his colleagues and injured a third before killing himself in Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday.
The incident took place within the force’s premises and prompted an immediate response from the local police and CRPF officials.
The incident occurred at a CRPF officer in Katimari Grant in Nagaon at around 7:30 am.
ASI Ballani Premavaram, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was posted on duty at the main gate of the CRPF (34 Battalion) camp in Katimari, authorities said.
The ASI reportedly used his government issued assault INSAS rifle and attacked his colleagues after a verbal dispute inside the barracks. One report says that the ASI reportedly took the weapon from the guards' room.
According to preliminary reports the ASI first opened fire and killed head constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel.
He then shot SI/GD Ramn Naresh Singh Yadav, who was checking documents. He died on the spot.
Another soldier, Govind Shripul, was seriously injured in the incident and was taken to a Civil Hospital before being moved to Guwahati for further treatment.
After the killing spree the ASI then entered the B/171 barracks and shot himself dead.
Officials are investigating the incident for the possible motive behind the attack.
