A 30-year-old woman from Bihar has been arrested after she allegedly beat her husband with a pressure cooker and strangled him to death after a domestic dispute, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused, Sunita Hariram Singh, originally from Rohtas district in Bihar, was arrested on Tuesday.
Police said that the accused initially tried to mislead them by reporting the death as accidental/.
According to an official, a heated argument broke out between the couple after the man reportedly failed to bring sarees for the accused. She reportedly assaulted him with a pressure cooker lid and strangled him.
"Victim Hareram Kishunji Singh (35) was at his home in Badlapur East on July 19 when a heated argument broke out between the couple after he failed to bring sarees. In a fit of anger, she assaulted him with a pressure cooker lid and strangled him," the official said.
Police said that the couple lived in Badlapur for the past nine years with their seven-year-old son.
The son had reportedly run to the room owner’s house seeking help to stop the fight.
To conceal the crime, she told the room owner that Hariram suffered from a heart attack.
The death was initially registered with an Accidental death report; more details emerged after the government hospital, examining the body, gave a medical report to the police. A full investigation was made after that.
"The report confirmed that the death was unnatural and caused by violent asphyxia as a result of strangulation. Subsequent inquiries conducted with the deceased's family members and the landlord raised strong suspicion against the wife," said senior inspector Nitin Patil from the Badlapur East police station.
Sunita has been booked under relevant sections of the BNS. Their son is being cared for by relatives.
