A 26-year-old woman from Hyderabad who had gone to Oman’s Muscat for work has alleged that she was subjected to abuse and forced to work for 15 hours daily without any pay.

She had travelled to the country after being promised a job as a housemaid by a recruitment agency.

Shabnam Begum said that she travelled to Muscat on March 26 after a local recruitment agency assured her of employment as a domestic worker.

In a self-recorded video sent to Hyderabad politician and Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjed Ullah Khan. She said that she was made to work 12 to 15 hours a day without any salary for more than three months.

She also said that they didn't give her a mobile phone for a month and a half. "They also didn't give me a mobile phone for a month and a half," she said in the video.

She left Muscat after being promised a monthly salary of 200 Omani riyals or Rs 50,000.

Begum also said that she was ‘tortured” and beaten” and was denied proper food during her stay.

She said that she escaped her employers and reached the Indian Embassy in Muscat after being unable to bear the abuse.

She has alleged, however, that her agents took away her passport and appealed to Amjed to “save” her.

Amjed Ullah , in the x post, wrote “After reaching Oman, she was allegedly forced to work in different houses for 12-15 hours daily, denied proper food and accommodation, and was not paid any salary for four months."

He also said that her family requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to direct the Indian Embassy in Muscat to ensure her safety and arrange her immediate repatriation to Hyderabad.

The embassy replied saying it had taken cognisance of the matter and it is being taken up at appropriate levels.
