The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved the decision to rename Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district to Parshuram Puri.

The proposal to change the name of the town was submitted on June 25, 2025.

The town is being renamed after the belief that it was the birthplace of Lord Parashurama. The formal name-changing process is set to begin soon.

The Shahjahanpur Municipal Council had passed the proposal in its board meeting in March 2018 and September 2023. The District magistrate then sent the proposal to the state government, which then forwarded it to the centre.

The name Jalalabad, meanwhile, is said to have originated from the Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar.

Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak spoke to ANI about the name change, saying, "There had been a long-standing demand from the people to change the name of Jalalabad, a town in Shahjahanpur district. They demanded that since it is the birthplace of Lord Parashuram, it should be named Parshuram Puri. After receiving permission from the Government of India, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet unanimously approved the new name of Jalalabad, 'Parshuram Puri.' More than 29 proposals were passed in today's cabinet meeting."

Along with the name change, the cabinet also approved 27 out of 29 proposals. One of them included a proposal to establish a startup mission to attract investment in UP. The cabinet also approved the Chief Minister's Risk Management and Livestock Insurance Scheme proposal in Minister Dharampal Singh's Livestock and Dairy Department. The scheme is set to protect animals raised by small and marginal farmers, livestock breeders, and dairy farm owners, and to insure them in the event of an epidemic, animal disability, or death, and will be implemented in all 75 districts.

The UP cabinet approved the establishment of Maharishi Yogi International Agricultural University in Bilhaur, Kanpur, Thakur Yugraj Singh University in Fatehpur, and Ajay Kumar Garg University in Ghaziabad. Several other important proposals were approved, including increasing the pensions of chairpersons and members of the Public Service Commission.

Additionally, proposals to build 100-bed hospitals in Gorakhpur and Moradabad, and an ESI medical college in Varanasi have been approved. Fifty per cent of the seats in the Varanasi Medical College are reserved for families of labourers.

The cabinet meeting was held at the Chief Minister's official residence at 5 Kalidas Road in Lucknow.
