Delhiites are finally set to get some relief from the intense heat wave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain across the national capital later in the day on June 22.
Partly cloudy skies are expected in Delhi, with the IMD predicting light afternoon or evening showers. The rain could bring severe weather—including thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts hitting up to 60 kmph.
The southwest monsoon is advancing steadily across India, though at a slower pace than expected.
Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh will have favourable conditions over the next 24 hours.
A red alert has been issued for Assam and Meghalaya, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on Monday.
Meanwhile, IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim.
Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan and Goa, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Telangana.
The IMD warns of widespread thunderstorms nationwide. Rajasthan faces thundersqualls with gusts up to 80 kmph, while winds of 50–60 kmph are likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are forecast over parts of Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, among other regions.
However, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in some parts of Madhya Pradesh, areas of Uttar Pradesh adjoining Bihar, and Telangana till June 24. Hot and humid conditions are also expected over Odisha and parts of interior Karnataka.
