At least four people were rescued on Saturday after a five-storey building collapsed at the Saeedulajab area of Delhi's Mehrauli, near the Saket Metro Station, with several more feared dead.

Fire officials said that five fire tenders, in addition to rescue teams, were rushed to the site of the collapse to carry out the operation.

They added that a light van had also been dispatched to aid rescue personnel.

A DFS official told Hindustan Times that the fire force had received a call about the collapse of the building at about 7:45 PM on Saturday.

The caller had also informed that a number of people had been trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.

A number of civilians also gathered at the spot, and joined the rescue personnel in searching and aiding the trapped people.

Visuals from the scene showed that building completely devastated, with most pillars lying broken, as police and fire rescue personnel attempted to find more people trapped under the debris.

"Teams from NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence are carrying out rescue operations on a war footing. Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families," Delhi CM Rekha Gupta wrote in an X post, adding that she was "deeply concerned" by the collapse.

Some eyewitnesses have already begun questioning how the building collapsed.

"How were students working in this building? ... Some people must still be stuck there ... It was at least a 5-storey building ... My aunt is still stuck there," an eyewitness told ANI.
