Tensions erupted after a raid was conducted at the house of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan near Bakery Junction in Thiruvananthapuram. ED teams reportedly arrived at Vijayan’s residence early in the morning under heavy security.

CPI(M) workers allegedly attacked vehicles belonging to Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and smashed car windows.

The ED had launched searches at 12 locations, including Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence in Kannur, his rented house at Bakery Junction in Thiruvananthapuram, and the Kozhikode residence of his son-in-law and Public Works Department Minister, P.A. Mohammed Riyas. CPI(M) leaders criticised both the ED and the Central Government over the action.

The raids followed a High Court order allowing the ED to continue its investigation into the alleged “monthly payment” case. The investigation is currently focused on Pinarayi Vijayan and his daughter, Veena Vijayan. The case concerns allegations that crores of rupees were diverted from CMRL to various individuals under the guise of fake expenses. According to the ED, Veena Vijayan has been identified as one of the major beneficiaries who allegedly received money illegally.

Here are five updates you need to know about the development:

1. CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby was detained after the party organised a protest march to the ED headquarters in the national capital.

2.  Meanwhile, Pinarayi Vijayan lamented the lack of support from the Congress, saying: “Do not think that conducting raids can weaken us. The party has always given unwavering support, and what happened today is proof of that. There is much more to say, but I will speak later.”

3. The raids took place at ten locations in Kerala and two outside the state. Searches in Kannur and Kozhikode have since been completed.

4.  Three vehicles were damaged as stones, bottles, and other objects were reportedly thrown at the convoy, Manorama Online said in a report. Protesters also allegedly snatched helmets from police personnel stationed outside and threw them at CRPF personnel inside the premises. Bottles were also reportedly hurled, the report added. Shyam R Nair, driver of one of the vehicles suffered an eye injury in the incident.

5. Reports say Pinarayi Vijayan and his daughter, Veena Vijayan, were present at the Bakery Junction residence, and ED officials reportedly recorded Veena Vijayan’s statement. Raids were also conducted at the residence of CMRL Managing Director Sasidharan Kartha. It was a team of five-strong ED officers that reached Thiruvananthapuram in the company of eight officers to provide security cover.
