Even as the southern parts of the country, including Kerala, have started experiencing rain, the scorching heat continues to wreak havoc in North India.

With heatwave conditions intensifying across several parts of the country, doctors are warning that prolonged exposure to high temperatures may adversely affect not only physical well-being but also eye and neurological functioning, especially among children, senior citizens, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.

DELHI-NCR: Temperatures in Noida, Greater Noida, and the wider Delhi-NCR reportedly crossed 42 degrees Celsius. Delhi, meanwhile, has been reeling under heatwave conditions over the past few days, with temperatures crossing the 45 degrees Celsius mark in several areas, leading to heatstrokes, extremely dry conditions, and warm nights. There seems to be no relief from the intense heat, which is expected to persist for at least a few more days.

Across the national capital, veterinarians and rescuers say that distress calls involving birds and stray animals suffering from dehydration, heatstrokes, and infections have risen sharply over the past few weeks.

MADHYA PRADESH: A red alert for heatwaves remains in place in the Chhatarpur district on Sunday, with the temperature crossing 41°C since early morning. The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

RAJASTHAN: The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur has issued a heatwave alert, warning that weather conditions are likely to remain dry across most parts of the state for the next three to four days. Dust-laden winds with speeds of 20–30 km/h are also expected, along with a further rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius in temperatures. The department said that on May 26 and 27, some parts of western Rajasthan may witness maximum temperatures reaching 46–47 degrees Celsius, with isolated places likely to experience severe heatwave conditions.

However, a fresh western disturbance is expected to bring some relief from May 28–29, with the possibility of strong thunderstorms, winds reaching 50–60 km/h, and light rainfall in parts of the state. This is likely to lower maximum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius.

ODISHA: The IMD on Saturday forecast the continuation of heatwave conditions across Odisha until May 28, with five places in the western region of the state recording temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or above. The IMD has predicted heatwave conditions in parts of the Boudh district, alongside hot and humid conditions over the Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Nayagarh, and Bolangir districts on Sunday.

According to the IMD, there will be no large change in maximum temperatures or daytime temperatures across the state over the next five days.

HIMACHAL PRADESH: The Shimla Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow warning for heatwave conditions in parts of the state on May 26 and 27, with districts including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur likely to be affected. It also forecast a fresh wet spell and thunderstorms in several parts of the state over the next few days under the influence of a western disturbance.
