Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) president M. K. Stalin has instructed party cadres to be prepared for early elections, as he believes the state government could fall at any time.
At a recent meeting of DMK district secretaries, Stalin recounted how the party has bounced back from past electoral setbacks and asserted that it would return to power again.
“There are chances that assembly elections may happen along with the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. We shall make a comeback and win again,” he said.
DMK leaders have been predicting an early collapse of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government ever since actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister.

TVK, which secured 108 seats in the Assembly—10 short of a majority—formed the government with the support of Congress and four former DMK allies. The Congress, with five seats, is expected to be part of the government, while other parties such as VCK, CPI, CPM, and IUML, each with two seats, are extending outside support.
Additionally, 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs have voted in favour of the government during the trust vote in the Assembly.
However, DMK, which is the second-largest party with 59 seats, reportedly expects political instability if the Speaker disqualifies the rebel AIADMK MLAs or if former DMK allies withdraw their support to the Vijay-led government. There has already been disgruntlement among the TVK allies over the possible induction of the AIADMK rebels into the bloc.
“The sun (DMK symbol) will never set in Tamil Nadu,” Stalin told cadres, according to an NDTV report. The DMK chief, however, took responsibility for the party’s defeat and formed a 36-member committee to study the reasons behind the loss. Stalin himself lost his stronghold of Kolathur to TVK’s V. S. Babu.
Stalin also acknowledged that Vijay’s party performed better in social media campaigns and urged cadres to strengthen the DMK’s presence on digital platforms.
“Politics that we once discussed in tea shops must now be discussed on social media handles,” he reportedly said.
Although the Vijay-led government currently appears to have comfortable numbers in the assembly, DMK’s repeated references to possible political instability are seen as a strategic effort to keep cadres mobilised, pressure ruling coalition partners, and project confidence in a future return to power.
While Stalin foresees the possibility of assembly elections in 2029, DMK leader and Tiruchendur MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan made an even more aggressive prediction, saying the government would not last beyond six months.
“Only four more months this government will survive. There is one person called Aadhav Arjuna. If you have guts, resign your MLA position; I will also do it. Let’s face off in Tiruchendur. This is our town. We will defeat anyone,” he said on Monday.
Aadhav Arjuna, a close aide of Vijay, won the Villivakkam seat in Chennai.
