Delhi Police on Friday slammed the surge in reports of missing girls and women in Delhi and said that they will be taking action against the individuals responsible for spreading panic.

In a post on X, Delhi police stated, “After following a few leads, we discovered that the hype around the surge in missing girls in Delhi is being pushed through paid promotion. Creating panic for monetary gains won't be tolerated, and we'll take strict action against such individuals.”
According to data shared by Delhi Police ther number of people reported missing in the national capital in January was proportionally lower than that of previous years. According to the data, 1,777 people were reported missing in January 2026.
Police also clarified that most missing person reports also included short-term absences and temporary loss of contact, and do not necessarily point to long term dissappearance. They said that about 629 missing persons were also sucessfully traced by Delhi police.

Over the past few days the has been an increasing number of social media posts and media reports of a surging number of missing cases, particularly of missing girls and women in Delhi.
Netizens had already suspected that the posts were part of some 'paid promotion' before the warning was issued by Delhi police. Users on X claimed that the articles and posts were promotions for an upcoming film.
One user said, “Recently, I heard about missing girls in Delhi in reels, and a lot of influencers were posting about missing girls. I also thought maybe it was true, but then I heard that this is only a PR thing for a Bollywood movie called Mardaani 3, whose story is about missing girls."

The reports claimed that about 500 women and girls went missing from the national capital in just the first 15 days of 2026.
Numbers said that out of the total 807 people who went missing during the time period, 509 of them were women and girls. Reports repeated claims that about 54 people went missing daily in Delhi.
