A 30-year-old man was arrested after he brutally murdered his office colleague and HR manager and dumped her body on a bridge over the Yamuna River in Agra. Police said that they tracked down the killer after the woman’s naked, headless body was found inside a gunny bag on January 24.
The victim, Minky Sharma, 32, a resident of Tedhi Baghia in Agra, was reported missing by her family after she failed to return home from her office in Sanjay Place on January 23.
In the early hours of January 24, locals alerted about a suspicious gunny bag left in the Jawahar Bridge. Police, upon inspection, found the body with its legs severed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Sayed Ali Abbas swiftly formed five special teams to investigate. CCTV footage from the area showed a man dragging the gunny bag from an office building and later riding a scooter towards the bridge.
More footage from around the area allowed police to identify the culprit, Vinay Singh, a computer operator who worked at the same office as Sharma.
Singh eventually confessed to the murder upon interrogation. He said that the two had been in a relationship for over two years but that he grew suspicious after learning that Sharma was in contact with another man for about six months.
The suspicion led to frequent arguments between the two.
On January 23, Singh called Sharma to their office and then attacked her with a knife, leaving a fatal injury on her neck. He then dismembered the body and packed her into the gunny bag. Her head was placed into a separate backpack.
Singh then used Sharma's scooter to transport the body to the bridge, intending to throw it over the Yamuna.
However, he struggled to lift it and left the body on the bridge after noticing passers-by.
He disposed of the victim's head, cloths and mobile phone and bag near a drain before leaving the scooter in a secluded area.
An FIR has been registered at the Trans Yamuna police station under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
Police have recovered the victims' clothes and the knife, and efforts are being made to find the other evidence linked to the crime.
DCP Abbas said that investigations revealed that Singh wanted to marry Sharma, but she had refused.
