The BJP is expected to announce Pankaj Chaudhary, the Union Minister of State for Finance, as its next Uttar Pradesh unit chief in a ceremony at Lucknow on Saturday.
According to officials, Chaudhary will file his nomination papers today.
Party sources say that Chaudhary’s name will be announced unofficially on Saturday at 2 pm. This is because the possibility of nominating any other leader is very low, which will mean that the BJP's UP state president could be announced without an election.
The formal announcement will be made on Sunday.
Uttar Pradesh Yodi Adityanath is backing the minister for the post.
Who is Pankaj Chaudhary?
Pankaj Chaudhary currently serves as the Union Minister of the State in the Ministry of Finance. He is a seven-time MP from the Mahrajganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Chaudhary’s mother, Ujjwal Chaudhary, had served as the Maharajganj District Panchayat President.
He had served as a member of the municipal corporation in Gorakhpur from 1989 to 1991.
During this time, he served as the Deputy Mayor of the municipal corporation for a year.
During this period, he served as Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation for a year. He was later appointed as the Deputy Mayor of Gorakhpur.
He later joined as a member of the BJP in 1990.
He was appointed as the Union Minister of State for Finance in the second PM Modi cabinet.
There has been speculation that the BJP is trying to give the party's State president post to an OBC candidate.
Pankaj belongs to the Kurmi community, which is the second-largest OBC community after the Yadav community.
The BJP had lost votes from the Kurmi community in Purvanchal in the Lok Sabha election.
Chaudhary, as a seven-time MP, has a strong influence in the area.
Maharajganj, where Chaudhary hails from, is also adjacent to Gorakhpur, where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is from, making them from the same area of Purvanchal.
