As many as 11 people died as two buses operated by state-run transport corporation collided head-on near Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu. Over 25 people suffered injuries in the incident.
According to Tamil Nadu police, the deceased include eight women and a child. The victims succumbed to injuries at the spot itself, police said. District authorities rushed to the spot and expedited rescue efforts. The accident occurred at Vairavanpatti near Tirupattur, approximately 15km away from Karaikudi. Police said a probe is underway to ascertain cause of the accident.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condoled the deaths and expressed shock and grief over the loss of lives. The chief minister said he has directed the district collector and Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan to render all help to the affected persons and ensure appropriate treatment to the injured. The injured were rushed to government hospitals nearby for treatment.
The chief minister announced solatium of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the victims and Rs 1 lakh to those with grievous injuries. An assistance of Rs 50,000 was announced for persons with minor injuries. Leaders from Opposition, including AIADMK, PMK and AMMK, condoled the deaths.
