As Mumbai marks the 17th anniversary of the 26/11 attacks carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists from Pakistan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stressed India’s ‘zero tolerance policy’ on terrorism.

A group of 10 terrorists entered the city on the night of November 26, 2008, via sea route and launched a series of coordinated attacks for the next 60 hours, killing 166 people and injuring several others.

Taj and Oberoi Hotels, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Jewish centre at Nariman House, Cama Hospital, Metro Cinema, and the Leopold Cafe were among the targets, as these places were frequented by foreign travellers.

“On this very day in the year 2008, terrorists carried out a cowardly attack on Mumbai and committed heinous and inhuman acts. I pay my respects to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives while bravely facing the Mumbai terrorist attacks, and I offer my tributes to all the people who lost their lives in this cowardly attack,” Shah said in a post on X.

The home minister noted that terrorism is a curse not just for one country, but for the entire human race. “The Modi government's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism is clear, which the entire world is appreciating and providing broad support to India's anti-terrorism campaigns.”

Except one, all terrorists who unleashed mayhem in India’s financial capital were killed in the ensuing encounter with security forces. Ajmal Kasab, who was caught alive, was sentenced to death in 2010 and executed in a Pune prison two years later.

The 17th anniversary of the brutal massacre, which comes close on the heels of the Delhi car blast, is a grim reminder to enhance national security and intelligence.

The Maharashtra Police are drafting a drone-use policy to strengthen security and surveillance in key cities, including Mumbai, as part of preparations against unconventional terror threats.

According to officials, Mumbai is under elaborate CCTV surveillance, enabling police to respond swiftly and avert any untoward incident.
