Nearly two months after the Karur tragedy, which claimed the lives of 41 people, actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief is likely to hold a public rally on December 4.
The party was forced to suspend its election campaign in Tamil Nadu after the stampede-like situation in Karur.
According to party sources, Vijay is likely to resume his political campaign from Salem. During a recent meeting of the general committee and executive committee of the party, the leaders had urged Vijay to restart his political tour. They had reportedly told the TVK chief that after Namakkal and Karur, he should now reach out to people in Salem, where the actor-politician has a large support base. Reports suggest that Vijay has, in principle, agreed to the request.
A report in The News Minute say that the party's high command is expected to take a call on the date and venue of the rally even as steps are being taken to work out the logistics for the same.
TVK Salem central district secretary ‘Tamilan’ Parthiban, in a formal request to Salem City Police Commissioner Anil Kumar Giri, suggested three possible venues for the programme.
“We have submitted a petition to the Salem City Police Commissioner seeking permission for our party gathering on December 4 in the city. We have sought permission for three venues and are expecting approval for one,” The New Indian Express quoted him as saying.
The date that the party plans to hold the rally coincides with Karthigai Deepam.
All the venues suggested are open grounds, even as the Tamil Nadu government is set to file the final draft standard operating procedure to regulate political rallies in the state soon.
City Commissioner Anil Kumar Giri confirmed that a request regarding the rally has been received and the authorities are currently reviewing it.
According to reports, in the petition, TVK has said it will comply with all measures suggested by the police, including crowd management and traffic rules, to ensure the safety of people who turn up.
