Haryana Police have tightened security across the state as the ‘suicide’ of Dalit IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar sparked a wave of protests.
A heavy police force has been deployed outside the officer’s residence in Chandigarh, while one side of the road has been closed to the public.
The government has also issued a state-wide alert to ensure law and order and communal harmony, instructing all field officers and staff to be fully prepared for any situation.

The directives were issued by the General Administration Department (Political Branch) on behalf of the Chief Secretary to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Haryana DGP, and all Police Commissioners, IGPs, and DCs/SPs of all districts for compliance with these directions.
"All concerned officers are hereby directed to maintain close coordination with local organisations and community leaders, monitor the situation continuously and initiate all measures required to uphold peace and public order,” said the government order.
It also directed the local authorities to promptly address any developments having the potential to disturb harmony.
The order came in the wake of protests organised by some Dalit outfits and opposition parties at different places in Haryana, demanding strict action against the accused.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, allegedly shot himself dead on October 7. In his suicide note, he accused eight senior IPS officers of "blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities”.
Rahul meets family
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met the family of the late IPS officer in Chandigarh on Tuesday, and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to act immediately in the case.

Talking to reporters, Gandhi said Kumar's death is not just about the respect of one family but all Dalits.
"A wrong message is being sent out to Dalits... that no matter how successful you are, if you are Dalit, you can be oppressed and crushed," the Congress leader said.
He also claimed that there was a lot of pressure on Kumar's family, particularly his two daughters.
Family demands arrests
The Haryana government has sent State DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferred Rohtak's Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.
The two officers had been named in the note allegedly written by Kumar before his death.
The officer's family, while seeking their arrest, has refused to give consent for a post-mortem and cremation until its demands are addressed.
