Kerala police's Crime Branch has registered a case against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil, who is facing sexual misconduct allegations from multiple women.
The development comes hours after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said legal actions will be taken against the tainted MLA, adding that his alleged threat to kill one of the victims show "criminal tendencies. The CM was referring to a leaked audio clip in which he persuades a woman to undergo abortion and threatens to kill her if she fails to do so.
None of the women who raised allegations against Rahul have filed a formal complaint with the police. Hence, police initially refused to take action. But later, top police officials sought legal advice before deciding to register an FIR.
The Congress has suspended Rahul's primary membership in the party days after he resigned from the post of Youth Congress state president.
