As rains continued to lash Palakkad district in Kerala, District Collector and District Disaster Management Authority Chairperson Madhavikutty M.S. issued an order declaring a holiday for all educational institutions.

Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a yellow alert for the district for Tuesday.

The holiday will be applicable to school examinations as well.

The holiday has been announced as a precautionary measure to avoid disaster situations, considering the waterlogging in many areas due to heavy rain and wind, and the safety of children, the collector said in a Facebook post.

The holiday is applicable to educational institutions, including Anganwadis, nurseries, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, kindergartens, madrasas, and private tuition centres.

However, the holiday will not apply to colleges, professional colleges, pre-scheduled public examinations, interviews, Navodaya Vidyalaya, and Model Residential Schools.

Parents have been instructed to ensure that children do not enter rivers or check dams during the holiday and remain safely at home. For safety reasons, there are also instructions to avoid playing on turf and other playgrounds and to refrain from taking selfies or shooting videos near bridges and water bodies.

The district collector has informed that the education department should take steps to reschedule working days to compensate for the lost academic days.
