Mumbai rains: Several roads waterlogged; Andheri subway closed; IMD predicts more showers till July 26

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, leaving several roads waterlogged and disrupting vehicular movement in many parts of the city.

The Andheri subway (in western part of Mumbai) has been temporarily closed for traffic due to water accumulation.

“Due to two feet of rainwater accumulating at the Andheri subway, traffic has been closed, and the traffic there has been diverted via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge,” the traffic police said in a post on X.

Motorists complained of slow traffic movement on both the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway due to rain and other reasons during the morning rush hours, reported PTI news agency.

Locals trains were also running with a little delay.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predictions, the city is likely to witness moderate to heavy rains till July 26.

The IMD has issued a rain alert for Borivali, Malad, Kandivali, Goregaon, Thane, Andheri-Ghatkopar, BKC, Kurla, and Chembur.

"Rain is expected to get heavier in the next 48 hours, and there may also be strong winds and thunderstorms," said the weather department.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour are predicted for July 21 and 22. 

The continuous rains, however, have provided some relief on the water supply front. Seven reservoirs providing water to Mumbai are now 81.86 per cent full, collectively holding 11,84,796 million litres, shows the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on July 19.

According to the IMD, the overall temperature will remain mild in the city, although humidity levels may remain steady.
