Delhi building collapse: Two dead, eight—including baby—rescued from rubble of four-storey building at Seelampur; Fire dept at scene

Tragedy struck on Saturday morning in the national capital after a four-storey building collapsed in the Welcome area (Seelampur) of northeast Delhi, killing two and injuring eight others including a baby. Police said that some people could be trapped under the rubble.

Latest reports from the site state that at least eight persons were rescued from the debris—including a one-year-old infant—and rushed to nearby hospitals. According to locals in the area, a family of ten members lived in the building.

According to the fire department, bodies of a man and a woman were found were pulled out of the debris and sent to GTB Hospital. Among the injured, seven were shifted to JPC Hospital and one to GTB Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police told agencies that they received the call about the building collapse by 7 am. Multiple rescue agencies, including the fire department are on the scene.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Sandeep Lamba told agencies that Matloob, the owner of the building, resides in the building with family members. "The ground floor and first floor are unoccupied. The building opposite also sustained damage," Lamba told PTI.

Before the fire department arrived, some locals who were at the scene became first responders and started the rescue. Once the rescue team arrived, they worked together to get three people out. 

Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg in the statement said that the building collapsed in Gali No. 5 at Janta Colony, near Idgah road in Seelampur.

“A total of seven fire tenders rushed to the site,” said Garg, reiterating that three persons were rescued and that the search operation is still on.
