In a tragic incident, six girls drowned while taking a bath in the Yamuna River at the Nagla Nathu Ghat in the Sikandra area of Agra on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports, the girls were making social media reels when one of the victims accidentally ventured into deep water and began to drown. In their attempts to save her, all other girls were swept away by the strong current.

The girls hailed from Sikandra area of the city. Muskan (18) and her sisters Divya (13), Sandhya (12), and Naina (14), had gone to the river for a bath. They were joined by their cousins—Sonam (12), and Shivani (17).

Reports said while four girls drowned, two others were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. However, both of them succumbed later.

A relative of the girls told news agency IANS that the victims were working in a farm near the river and they later went into the water to cool off.

“There is a farm near the riverbank where they were working. Due to the extreme heat, they went into the water to cool off. We had no idea such a tragedy would happen,” he was quoted as saying.

The district administration has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
