After DMK, Congress to approach Supreme Court against controversial Waqf Amendment Bill

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said they will approach the Supreme Court against the bill very soon. Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin also said they will petition against the bill in apex court

The Congress is set to approach the Supreme Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill passed by the Parliament during the early hours of Friday. Congress ally Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is also planning to petition against the alleged anti-Muslim bill in the apex court.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said they will soon approach the Supreme Court and challenge the constitutionality of the bill. “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” the general secretary (Communications) tweeted. 

Ramesh asserted that Congress will continue to oppose all assaults of the Narendra Modi government on constitutional principles. “We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” he said. The Congress leader mentioned the Supreme Court is already hearing petitions moved by the party against amendments to the RTI Act, 2005 and Conduct of Election Rules, 2024. He added the party has also moved a petition seeking the implementation of the Places of Worship Act, 1991 in full spirit. 

After a 12-hour debate, the Rajya Sabha cleared the Waqf (Amendment) Bill during the early hours of Thursday. The Lok Sabha passed the bill on Thursday. In Rajya Sabha,128 members voted in favour of the bill and 95 members opposed it. The bill has been forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu for her assent. 

Earlier, after the Lok Sabha cleared the bill, DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said they would approach the apex court against the bill. Stalin, addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday said, “This bill should be withdrawn. The Bharatiya Janata Party has passed the bill despite opposition from major political parties, with help from friendly alliance partners. The passing of the Bill in the wee hours is an attack on the Indian Constitution, against secularism.”
