Following the Supreme Court's approval, the Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to clarify whether more people were involved in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year along with Sanjay Roy, the only convict in the case so far.
During the hearing of a plea by the victim’s parents requesting further investigation into the case, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh also directed the CBI to present the case diary in court and provide an update on the progress of the investigation in the next hearing on March 28.

Unhappy with the CBI investigation, the victim’s parents approached the Calcutta High Court, which directed them to seek clarification from the Supreme Court. Last week, the Supreme Court permitted them to present their plea before the Calcutta High Court.
In their petition, the parents have requested a court-monitored reinvestigation by the CBI, reportedly arguing that three key witnesses were not questioned by the federal agency.
During the day’s hearing, Justice Ghosh further questioned the CBI, asking whether there were indications of gang rape and who were initially on the list of suspects when the investigation began.
The CBI informed the court that the investigating officer is currently out of the state. The agency requested some additional time, assuring that they would respond to all queries.
Advocate Shamim Ahmed, representing the victim’s parents, criticised the state government outside the court, alleging that it was unwilling to allow further investigation. The state, however, stated that while it had no objections to an additional probe, it raised concerns about whether the law permitted it, given that the trial had already concluded.
Meanwhile, the court denied the request of convict Sanjay Roy’s lawyer that his client be included in the case proceedings. The court stated that his involvement would be reconsidered only if a future ruling posed any potential harm to him.
