‘Comments made in individual capacity’: India to Bangladesh after Dhaka protests Sheikh Hasina’s remarks

A day after Bangladesh urged India to stop Sheikh Hasina from making 'false' statements, New Delhi on Friday summoned Dhaka's acting high commissioner. 

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement said that Md Nurul Islam was summoned at 5 pm. 

"It was conveyed that India desires a positive, constructive and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh, which has been reiterated several times in recent high-level meetings. It is, however, regrettable that regular statements made by Bangladesh authorities continue to portray India negatively," said MEA. 

MEA highlighted that the statements made by Bangladesh responsible for persistent negativity. 

It further added that the statements made by ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were in her "individual capacity" in which India has no role to play. 

"Conflating this with the Government of India’s position is not going to help add positivity to bilateral relations,” the statement read.

MEA also stressed on Bangladesh to reciprocate its efforts for constructing a mutually beneficial relationship. 

Hasina, in an online address, urged her supporters to resist Bangladesh's interim government and accused it of seizing power unconstitutionally. Hundreds of protesters. recently barged in and demolished the residence of Hasina's father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. 

Meanwhile, Dhaka expressed "deep concern, disappointment and serious reservation" over Hasina's comments. 

"The ministry requested...India to immediately take appropriate measures, in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding, to stop her from making such false, fabricated and incendiary statements," a Reuters report said.
