External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will address the Rajya Sabha on Thursday over the “inhumane” deportation of Indians who were allegedly staying in the United States illegally. The government’s statement comes after both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned following opposition’s protest over the issue.

Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar informed the upper house that the union minister will address the house at 2pm on Thursday. The opposition had slammed the government for the alleged “inhumane” manner in which the persons were deported.

The first batch of illegal Indian immigrants from the US reached the country on Wednesday. A US military aircraft with 104 illegal Indian immigrants onboard landed in Amritsar. The migrants alleged their hands and legs were cuffed throughout the journey and they were unshackled only after landing at the Amritsar airport, PTI reported.

Opposition leaders protested in Parliament premises over the issue on Thursday. Opposition leaders including Congress MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav took part in the protests. Some MPs took part in the protest wearing handcuffs.

The Centre has reportedly cleared a list of 195 Indians who have entered illegally into the US. As per the list, the maximum number of migrants were from Punjab, 90 persons, followed by Haryana – 56, and Gujarat – 38.

Congress general secreaty K.C. Venugopal slammed the government over the issue and asked why India’s diplomatic ties with the US were not coming handy to avert such situations.

Former Union minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, “The US has a legal right to deport people living there illegally. But, we are protesting the way they were sent back,” PTI reported. He added a civil aircraft must have been used for the purpose.
