In a significant move toward reconciliation and communal harmony, a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits representing the JK Peace Forum (JKPF) met with Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in New Delhi to address the grievances of both communities, particularly those related to the migration of Kashmiri Pandits in 1989-90.
According to a JKPF statement, Mirwaiz acknowledged the shared suffering of Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits over the decades.
He reiterates his long-standing position that the plight of displaced Pandits is a humanitarian concern requiring compassionate redressal and added that Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits and stressed the need to make younger generations aware of Kashmir’s composite culture.
He urged a collective effort to rebuild trust and social unity.
The JKPF delegation highlighted the immense hardships faced by migrant Kashmiri Pandits over the last three decades, including displacement, economic struggles, and loss of heritage.
They said that despite their hardships, they have consistently supported their Muslim brethren in times of crisis.
Recognising Mirwaiz’s moral and spiritual influence, the delegation urged him to spearhead an initiative for peace and reconciliation,
As a result of the meeting, the formation of an Inter-Community Committee was agreed upon to be led by Mirwaiz . The committee will include representatives from all communities in Kashmir and will focus on facilitating the safe return of Kashmiri Pandits and their reintegration into society. It will also address the concerns of other minority groups in the region and focus on encouraging economic development, trade, and employment generation. The committee will work on preserving Kashmir’s rich cultural and religious heritage. It will explore avenues for government support in rehabilitating displaced Kashmiri Pandits. One of the proposals includes the creation of inclusive, non-ghettoised colonies, ensuring a harmonious reintegration process.
The delegation strongly endorsed Mirwaiz’s leadership in this initiative, considering it a major confidence-building measure. The Mirwaiz reaffirmed his commitment to ensure the success of this effort.
