In the wake of recent terror activities, a foolproof security plan has been implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of the Independence Day function on August 15.
While speaking to the reporters on Tuesday at Bakshi Stadium, the venue for the Independence Day celebrations, IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi said that the police are alert to the emerging security challenges in Kashmir.
“We are aware of the recent terror activities. There is an operation going on in Kokernag,’’ he said. “We have laid a multi-layer security grid for smooth functions on August 15 across Kashmir.”
The IGP addressed the media after witnessing the full-dress rehearsal at Bakshi Stadium, where LG Manoj Sinha will unfurl the tricolour. His advisor will take the salute of the parade in Jammu.

The police and paramilitary forces have heightened vigilance across Srinagar, with vehicle checks being conducted at several places in the capital city, especially on the routes leading to Bakshi Stadium.
Reports indicate that security forces have also been deployed in civvies, and sharpshooters have been placed at important points to neutralise any threat.
Ground and aerial surveillance is also being carried out to keep a watchful eye on the capital city. Patrolling by security forces has also intensified to deter potential saboteurs.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Bhiduri, who also witnessed the full-dress rehearsal, said schoolchildren and others showed great enthusiasm, and locals are ready to join the event in large numbers. “I urge the people to come early and be seated. Smokers should keep cigarettes at home for some time and enjoy the great event,” he said. He said that the invitation to witness the event was open to all.
Several cultural programmes will also be part of the celebrations at Bakshi Stadium.
