A police Doberman dog reportedly ran eight kilometres in rain non-stop with its handler to catch a murder accused who was reportedly on the verge of claiming a second life in Karnataka's Davanagere, reports said.

The story began in Davanagere's Channagiri on Thursday when a man's lifeless body was found on Santhebennur's Bada Road near a petrol pump. Police dog Tunga 2 and her handler constable Shafi were summoned to the scene to look for clues. After sniffing the victim's jacket at the crime scene, the canine started sprinting amidst heavy showers in the area, news reports said.

Tunga 2 finally halted in front of a house, about eight kilometres from the crime scene. Shafi and other officers heard a ruckus inside the house and went inside to check. They found a man beating his wife inside, a report said. The woman was on the verge of losing consciousness due to the assault when the policemen came to her aid, India Today said in a report.

The husband, identified as Rangaswamy, was arrested and interrogated by the cops. It was then that it became clear that Tuga 2 didn't stop at the house startled by the woman's cries for help. Rangaswamy's household was at the heart of the crime, the officers found out.

Rangaswamy had reportedly reached home after murdering Santhebennur-native Santosh -- the body of whom was found near the fuel station. He reportedly hacked Santosh to death using a machete as he suspected him of having an affair with his wife. After executing the crime, Rangaswamy came home intending to murder his wife as well, the news report said. Had Tunga 2 not rushed to reach the house in time, he could have killed the woman too, the officers said.
