Action will be taken against the guilty, we treat everyone equally, said Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after a 45-year-old woman got killed in an accident involving the son of a prominent leader of Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction in Mumbai on Monday. According to police, the accused is at large and they have already arrested his father and the driver of BMW car.
According to Mumbai police, the deceased was identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45) from Worli Koliwada. Kaveri was returning from the fish market along with her husband in a scooter during the early hours of Sunday, when the speeding BMW car, allegedly driven by Sena leader Rajesh Shah’s son Mihir Shah, crashed into the two-wheeler in front of Atria Mall in Worli, police said. The car allegedly ran over Kaveri and Shah fled from the spot with the car, said police.
According to police, while the husband managed to jump off from the scooter, Kaveri suffered grievous injuries in the crash and she succumbed to it while undergoing treatment at a hospital nearby.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “The Mumbai hit-and-run case that has happened is very unfortunate. I had a conversation with the police. Whoever is guilty, action will be taken against them. We treat everyone equally,” ANI reported.
Police sources told NDTV that Mihir Shah was drunk while he was behind the wheel. “Mihir Shah drank at a bar in Juhu last night. On his way home, he asked the driver to take him for a long drive. The car came to Worli and then Mihir insisted that he would drive. Soon after he took the wheel, the speeding BMW hit a scooter,” police told the publication.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray met the victim's husband Pradik Nakva at Worli police station. Thackeray said, "I will not go into the political leanings of Mr Shah, the accused of the hit and run, but I hope the police will act swiftly to catch the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully, there will be no political refuge by the regime."
