As Delhi residents struggle in the ongoing heatwave conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast light rains and thunderstorms in the national capital on Saturday.

The predictions comes as states like Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra have welcomed the monsoon already, with some places getting surplus rainfall in the first half of June.

The weatherman added that heatwave conditions will continue in Delhi and adjacent states Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for the next four to five days. Hilly states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also experiencing unusually high temperatures.

IMD said light rain and drizzle is expected in Delhi with a partly cloudy sky, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms. Maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to be around 44 degrees Celsius, which is four notches above seasonal average, with the IMD issuing an orange alert.

The minimum temperature recorded in the national capital on Saturday was 32.4 degrees Celsius, which four notches above seasonal average. On Friday, the minimum temperature was 33.3 degrees Celsius, the highest in June over the past six years.

An extended IMD prediction said Delhi will also see showers on June 20, by when the heatwave conditions are expected to subside.

The southwest monsoon is expected to advance in states like Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar and West Bengal this week.
