Mukhtar Ansari laid to rest in Ghazipur amid tight security

The gangster-turned-politician suffered cardiac arrest on Thursday

The mortal remains of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was buried at Mohammadabad's Kali Bagh cemetery in Ghazipur on Saturday. Ansari reportedly was laid to rest next to his mother’s grave.

Ansari, a former MLA who had been booked in more than 60 cases was lodged in district jail and died at Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Though his family alleged slow poisoning, an autopsy conducted by a panel of five doctors confirmed Ansari died of cardiac arrest. People took part in large numbers in the funeral procession in Ghazipur. 

 Ansari’s body was laid to rest amid tight security. The body was brought to the family's ancestral burial ground, about half a km from their residence. Security personnel, including that of the paramilitary, were deployed at strength around the Ansari residence and the burial ground. A minor scuffle broke out at the cemetery and a few tried to break the barricades to enter the cemetery ground. 

Mukhtar Ansari was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in April 2023 for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai by an MP-MLA court. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment on March 13, 2024, in a case related to the use of forged documents for obtaining an arms licence in 1990. 

Meanwhile, a chief judicial magistrate's court in Uttar Pradesh's Banda on Friday ordered a judicial inquiry into Ansari's death. The investigation team will be headed by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA Court Banda) Garima Singh, said the order issued by Banda Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bhagwan Das Gupta. The CJM has sought the probe report within a month.
