A 37-year-old legislator from Telangana, Lasya Nandita, died in a car accident on Friday morning at Patancheru on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Lasya Nandita, a first-time MLA of the BRS, was on her way to Gatchibowli from Basara when the mishap occurred. Police said no other vehicle was involved in the accident and the car rammed into a barrier on the outer ring road.

Though the reason for the accident is yet to be ascertained, police suspect that the driver may have fallen asleep. Though the MLA was taken to a private hospital, she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is being transferred to a Government hospital for postmortem examination.

Her driver, who is said to have suffered critical injuries, is also undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Besides the driver, Lasya's personal security officer, who was with her in the car, was also injured in the accident.

Lasya Nandita, daughter of a former MLA G Sayanna, was offered the ticket after Sayyanna's death. She contested the elections from the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency and won the seat by defeating BJP candidate N Sriganesh with a majority of 17,169 votes. Before venturing into politics, Lasya was serving as a corporator in the Kavadiguda ward.

Lasya was handpicked by former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to contest the elections. Last August, she was called to the Assembly by the chief minister after Sayanna's death. Lasya was then seen witnessing the proceedings from the visitors’ gallery while the discussion on the condolence motion for Sayanna was on. She later met the CM in his chambers.

Shockingly, this was the second accident that Lasya Nandita met with. The MLA was on her way to a party event in Nalgonda when her car rammed into a home guard, killing him on February 13. As per reports, K. Kishore of the Narketpally police station died after being hit by a speeding car driven by a drunk driver. Within moments, Lasya's car ran over Kishore.

Police had seized both the cars then. The MLA then posted a tweet on X saying she was involved in an accident on the way back from Nalgonda. "I'm okay, and there's nothing to worry about. Grateful for everyone's concern and support."
