Top Congress leaders on Tuesday met at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to discuss the government formation in Telangana.
Congress wrested power from the Bharat Rashtra Samiti in the southern state in the recently held election after winning 64 seats in the 119-member assembly.
According to reports, the meeting attended by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party national general secretary K.C. Venugopal, has cleared the name of party’s Telangana president Anumula Revanth Reddy as the chief minister.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Telangana Congress in-charge Manikrao Thakre were also present at the meeting.
“The decision has been taken,” Gandhi was quoted as saying by NDTV.
A meeting of the newly-elected Congress MLAs on Monday had resolved to authorise Kharge to appoint the leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
Reddy moved the resolution and it was seconded by senior MLAs, including Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and D Sridhar Babu.
Reddy won from Kodangal constituency with a margin of over 32,000 votes defeating his nearest BRS rival Patnam Narender Reddy. The Congress leader however lost from Kamareddy.
