Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has come out in support of party MP Mahua Moitra over the cash-for-query row, saying whoever is questioning the government at the Centre is being harassed.

Banerjee asked how action can be initiated against an MP without proving an iota of allegations against her.

“Whoever is questioning the government on the Adani issue is being harassed. How can the Lok Sabha ethics committee take any action against Mahua Moitra even before the allegations are proved against her?,” he asked.

"The committee is yet to take any action against BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri, but is very prompt in taking action against opposition MPs, who are fighting against the government and its policies,” the TMC leader further said.

The ethics committee, which is examining the allegations against Moitra, is set to meet on Thursday evening to adopt its draft report.

A few TV channels, which claim to have accessed the report, said the panel has recommended termination of Moitra’s Lok Sabha membership and a detailed probe into the matter.

Moitra is accused of taking bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani for asking questions in parliament targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani.

The MP deposed before the ethics panel on November 2, though she later accused the panel chairman of asking personal and unethical questions.
