SC gains full strength as two new judges take oath

With Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior lawyer Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan sworn in as Supreme Court judges, the apex court regained its full strength pf 34 judges on Friday.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud administered the oath of office to the new judges at the newly built apex court's auditorium.

The appointments of Justice Mishra and Viswanathan as judges was announced by the new Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in Twitter.

However, the full strength attained by the SC will only be for a brief period as three judges--Justice K.M. Joseph, Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice V. Ramasubramanian is set to retire in June.

Viswanathan upon the retirement of Justice J.B. Pardiwala on August 11, 2030, will become the Chief Justice of India and remain in the post till May 25, 2031.

The names of Justice Mishra and Vishwanathan was recommended by the collegium headed by CJI on May 16, it was cleared by the Centre within two days.

The warrant of appointments of Justice Mishra and Vishwanathan as top court judges was issued from the office of President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday.
