Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday named Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal as the candidates for mayor and deputy mayor posts. AAP has finalised six names as its candidates for the various MCD posts including the mayor and deputy mayor.

At a press conference held in Delhi, senior AAP leader Pankaj Gupta announced the names. The six names were shortlisted after the party's political affairs committee meeting and discussions.

The party's deputy mayor candidate Aaley Mohammad Iqbal is the son of AAP MLA Shoaib Iqbal.

The four names shortlisted for Standing Committee were Raminder Kaur, Sarika Chaudhary, Mohini Jeenwal and Mohd Aamil Malik.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the candidates.

"Congratulations n best wishes to AAP candidates @OberoiShelly n @AaleyIqbal for Mayor n Dy Mayor n AAP members Standing Committee members @SarikaSamar, @iRaminderKaur, @MohiniJeenwal n Aamil Malik God bless u all to make our beloved Del clean," he tweeted.

On December 7, the AAP won the MCD polls with 134 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP in the municipal corporation and reducing the Congress to just nine seats in a house of 250.

With the AAP winning a clear majority, the BJP announced that it would not contest the mayor's post. Delhi BJP's Adesh Gupta had said that the mayor would be from AAP and the BJP would play the role of a strong opposition.

The mayor is elected by all 250 municipal councillors, seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs of Delhi, besides 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly Speaker.
