Conservative party leader Rishi Sunak scripted history, becoming the first Indian-origin politician to become the prime minister of UK, that too on the occasion of Diwali.

Many took to Twitter to express their happiness and wish the new British PM Rishi Sunak.

“First Kamala Harris, now Rishi Sunak The people of the U.S. and the U.K have embraced the non-majority citizens of their countries and elected them to high office in government. I think there is a lesson to learned by India and the parties that practise majoritarianism,” tweeted Congress leader P Chidambaram.

Can something like this happen in India, wondered Shashi Tharoor.

“I think all of us will have to acknowledge that theBrits have done something very rare in the world,to place a member of a visible minority in the most powerful office. As we Indians celebrate the ascent of @RishiSunak, let's honestly ask: can it happen here?,” he wrote.

Historic moment indeed, wrote journalist Barkha Dutt.

A glass ceiling has been well and truly broken," wrote journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. "Breaking: Rishi Sunak to be next British PM: a PM of Indian origin on Diwali day: a glass ceiling has been well and truly broken. Let’s celebrate diversity in Britain and yes, hopefully in India too! ," he wrote.

Truly a #HappyDiwali & Proud moment for Indians across the World!, wrote a user.

"First Indian origin UK PM

-First Hindu PM of UK

-At 42, he is the youngest British PM in this century," wrote another.
