Amid the controversy surrounding the poster of performance documentary Kaali, which showed the goddess smoking a cigarette and holding an LGBTQ+ flag, TMC Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, on Tuesday, said Kaali to her is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess.

Speaking at a media event, she said people have the freedom to imagine their goddess, and pointed out that in some places alcohol is offered to deities, while this may be construed as blasphemy in other places.

She was responding to a question on the controversy surrounding the poster of the movie by filmmaker Leena Manimekalai.

The poster of the movie had kicked up a social media storm and a hashtag ''Arrest Leena Manimekalai' have been trending on Twitter. A section of people alleged that the poster hurt their religious sentiments and demanded the arrest of the filmmaker.

The Madurai-born Toronto-based director had shared the poster of the movie on Twitter on Saturday and said the film was part of the 'Rhythms of Canada' segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.

After she was accused of hurting religious sentiments, the director had said she was willing to pay with her life.

"I have nothing to lose. Till the time I live, I wish to live with a voice that speaks what I believe without fear. If the price for that is my life, it can be given," Manimekalai wrote in a Twitter post in Tamil in the wake of the hate tweets against her.
