The Agnipath scheme is a revolutionary step and it will strengthen the Indian armed forces. The 'Agniveers' will make history in strengthening national security and be recognised worldwide for their service, said BJP national president J.P. Nadda appealed to the youth not to fall prey to the "forces" that were resisting any reform or transformation in the country.

Nadda, who was addressing a meeting of gram panchayat presidents and vice-presidents in Chitradurga, and attended by 6,000 representatives, said that he was aware that there was a concerted effort to "instigate and mislead" the youth.

"There are certain forces in the country that do not want to see any reforms, transformation or a new scheme for our youths that can help channelise their energy in the right way, in the service of the nation. I appeal to the youth of this country to have faith in our Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said Nadda, adding that the youth must understand the depth of this scheme.

"The scheme will not only train 17-year-olds for the Indian armed forces but prepare them for life, too. The Agniveers can begin a new chapter by joining the armed forces or be absorbed into state services," said Nadda, also reiterating Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's assurance that the Agniveers, after four years of training, would be given preference in state services.

Nadda assured the youth that the BJP, under the leadership of Modi, was concerned about the youth of this country. "It is a huge opportunity and I want the youth, who are on the path of protest today, to try and understand the scheme," said Nadda. He also urged the sarpanchs to fight the negative propaganda against the scheme and to enlighten the rural youth about the benefits of the scheme.

On Saturday, Karnataka, too, witnessed protests in Dharwad, Belagavi and Raichur districts, demanding the withdrawal of the scheme. The protests in Belagavi, led by Congress MLA from Khanapur Anjali Nimbalkar, raised concern over the future of nearly 3,000 youths who had passed the physical test two years ago and were awaiting examination.

BJP national secretary C.T. Ravi, too, defended the scheme saying such efforts to impart education and training to the youths had been made in Israel, US and Russia among others. "The chiefs of the Armed Forces have already clarified on the issues and apprehensions (raised by people). This scheme will enhance the strength and capacity of our forces," said Ravi.
