IGNOU to offer special three-year programme for 'Agniveers'

To recognise skill training received by defence personnel while they were serving in the Armed forces, IGNOU will launch a three-year skill-based skill-based degree programme, a release from the Ministry of Education said.

The release said the aim of the programme was to equip defence personnel for jobs in the civilian sector. To enhance the future career prospects of Agniveers and equip them for various job roles in the civilian sector, the Ministry of Education will launch a special, three-year skill-based bachelor's degree programme for serving defence personnel that will recognize the skill training received by them during their tenure in the defence establishments, a release said.

The programme will be designed and executed by IGNOU. Skill training received by the agniveers will account for 50 % of the credits required for a graduate degree and the remaining 50 % will come from a basket of courses that cover a wide variety of subjects including languages, economics, history, agriculture, jyothish and others.

The course also offers multiple exit points for candidates - undergraduate certificate on successful completion of the first-year courses, undergraduate diploma at the end of second-year and degree at the end of third year on completion of course in three-year time frame. The courses will be recognized both in India and abroad for employment and education, the release said.
