A female teacher was shot dead by suspected militants on Tuesday morning at Goplapora in south Kashmir.

Reports said she was targeted at the High School in Gopalpora area of Kulgam district. She was critically wounded and shifted to Kulgam hospital where she was declared dead. The slain was identified as Rajni, wife of Raj Kumaar, of Samba district in Jammu.

The attack created fear in the area and large number of security forces cordoned off the area after the incident.

The attack came after the killing of Rahul Bhat, a migrant Kashmiri Pandit working under the Prime Minister’s Relief and Rehabilitation Scheme in Kashmir. Bhat was shot dead by militants at Tehsil office Chadoora in Budgam district. His killing sparked protests by migrant Kashmiri Pandits working under the PM’s Relief and Rehabilitation Scheme in Kashmir.

His killing was widely condemned by political leaders and civil society members .

The migrant Pandits staged protests at several places where they have been provided accommodation like Sheikhpora, Vessu and Ganderbal. They took to streets and demanded and alleged the government has failed to provide them security. The protesters also staged protests in camps and also took to the streets. The government took several measures to assuage their concerns including posting couples at the same place and also placing migrant employees at safer locations.

However, the migrant Pandits have rejected the government’s steps and demand they be relocated to Jammu or any other place as they are not feeling safe in Kashmir.

Several high ranking J&K administration officials including Lt Governor Manoj Sinha visited the protesting migrant employees to assure them but the migrant Pandits have refused to budge.

The latest incident is likely to create more problems for the government to calm the protesting migrant Pandits.

This is the third killing of a migrant employee in Kashmir since October . The first was the killing of Deepak Chand, a teacher in a school in Srinagar along with the school's principal Supinder Kour.
