Delhi continued to witness a steady increase in the number of new coronavirus cases with 517 new infections being reported on Sunday. Though no death has been reported, data from the city health department showed a 12 per cent increase in the number of new cases in the last 24 hours.

The test positivity rate, however, dropped to 4.21 per cent from the 5.33 per cent reported a day before.

On Saturday, Delhi had recorded 461 Covid cases and two deaths while on the previous day the number of new infections was 366. On Thursday, the number of cases was 325 and the positivity rate was 2.39 per cent.

The city's infection tally has now risen to 18,68,550 while the death toll stood at 26,160.

With the national capital showing an upward trend in new Covid-19 cases over the past few weeks, experts said people developing coronavirus-like symptoms should get themselves tested and authorities should make the wearing of masks mandatory to help check the spread of infection.

Doctors at leading government and private hospitals emphasised that there was a need to increase testing in the wake of the spike in cases, even as they said that"no drastic restrictions" were needed as of now, reported PTI.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) will hold a meeting on April 20 to take stock of the situation.

The Delhi government had on April 2 stopped the imposition of fines for not wearing masks.
