Covid-19 Xe variant detected in Gujarat

67-year-old man had travelled from Mumbai to Vadodara

Gujarat has reported its first case of Xe variant of Covid-19.

According to the state government, the variant was found in a 67-year-old person who had come to Vadodara by flight from Mumbai. His samples returned positive for the Xe variant on Friday night in the genome sequencing done at the Genome Sequencing Laboratory in Gandhinagar.

Dr Devesh Patel of Vadodara Municipal Corporation told The Week that the person hails from Mumbai and had come to Vadodara to attend a function. He was running fever and he returned to Mumbai mid March after he tested positive.

His sample was sent to Gandhinagar. Patel said that normally genome sequencing process takes three to four weeks. He added that the condition of the person is good. He reportedly has comorbities.

It is said that since he had fever, he did not meet anyone and returned to Mumbai. Sources said that those in close contact with the person have tested negative.
