N. Biren Singh took oath as the chief minister of Manipur for the second straight term on Monday, a day after he was unanimously elected the BJP Legislature Party Leader. Five other BJP MLAs—Kipgen, Y. Khemchand Singh, Th. Biswajit Singh, Awangbou Newmai, and Govindas Konthoujam—were sworn in as cabinet ministers.

Talking to reporters after the swearing-in, Singh said his government’s first step will be to make Manipur a corruption-free state.

“I would work day and night to wash out corruption from the state. The next step will be to wash out any kind of drug-related matter from the state. Thirdly, I will try to see that all the insurgents operating in the state are brought to the negotiating table and there are dialogues. These three will be my primary duties," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Singh on being sworn-in as the chief minister. "I am confident his team and he would take Manipur to newer heights of progress and continue the good work done in the last five years,” Modi tweeted.

Singh was elected the BJP Legislature Party Leader on Sunday at a meeting of the newly elected party MLAs in Imphal.

The BJP has returned to power in Manipur by winning 32 seats in the 60-member House.
