Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday hit out at The Kashmir Files, saying the movie incites hate and distorts history.

“Some films inspire change. Kashmir Files incites hate,” Ramesh said in a tweet.

“Truth can lead to justice, rehabilitation, reconciliation and peace. Propaganda twists facts, distorts history to whip up anger and promote violence. Statesmen heal wounds. Pracharaks exploit fear and prejudice to divide and rule,” he further said.

Written and directed by Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, the film depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the 1990s. It stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi among others.

The film has been mired in controversy since its launch on March 11 with the BJP and the opposition parties having conflicting views on it.

The BJP has openly come out in support of the film, with several states ruled by the party exempting it from entertainment tax. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has praised the movie, saying it has rattled the ecosystem which wanted to bury the truth.

The Congress, however, maintains that the film is misleading.

Earlier, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge termed The Kashmir Files as a one-sided movie and alleged that Prime Minister Modi was trying to polarise the society by promoting the film.
