The DMK is headed for a landslide victory in Tamil Nadu urban local body elections with party president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin terming it as a certificate to his government.

"As the DMK-led UPA alliance is winning with huge margins, I thank people. This is a certificate given to the last 9 months of our governance. This is recognition for the Dravidian model," Stalin said.

In Western Tamil Nadu, a region considered loyal to the AIADMK, the ruling party won 75 per cent of the seats. Though the AIADMK had won all 10 Assembly seats in Coimbatore, the DMK now has taken most of the seats in the urban civic polls.

In Chennai Municipal Corporation, the DMK won 143 seats as results for 187 out of 200 wards were declared. The AIADMK bagged 15 seats while the Congress 13.

Elections were held on Saturday in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats.

The elections came almost nine months after the 2021 Assembly polls in which DMK won 133 seats on its own in the 234-member assembly.
