BJP MP Varun Gandhi is continuing with tweets critical of the Narendra Modi government's policies.

On Tuesday, Varun tweeted of a key theme he has raised previously: Privatisation. He wrote, “Just privatisation of banks and railways will make 5 lakh employees 'forcefully retired' i.e., unemployed.

With every job that ends, the hopes of lakhs of families are lost. A 'public welfare government' can never promote capitalism by creating economic inequality at the social level.”

Days after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget, Varun wrote an article in The Hindu calling for a “relook at privatisation”. He tweeted a push for privatisation of about 350 PSUs with 10.3 lakh employees was a “push for layoffs, without a firm sense of job creation in a fragile economy”. He argued “To scale-up and reform PSUs could be a better alternative”.

In January, while visiting his constituency, Pilibhit, Varun claimed “important resources of the country” were being sold in the name of privatisation. He warned “Think what will happen to the country when everything is sold.”

In December, Varun warned against attempts to privatise key PSUs and banks. “If banks are privatised, 8-10 lakh people will lose jobs, they'll be 40-50-yr-old. Who'll retrain them & employ them again? Who'll feed their children? If BHEL,MTNL,BSNL,airports & airlines are sold, who'll employ common man's children?” he was quoted by ANI as saying. He had made the comments while meeting contract workers in Bareilly.

Last week, Varun tweeted about businessmen accused of serious fraud. Naming Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Rishi Agarwal, Varun tweeted a “strong government” was expected to take “strong action” on such cases.

Varun had been consistently critical of the Modi government's handling of the farmers' protests last year. His public statements had led to speculation he could switch to the Congress, given his familial ties to the grand old party.
