While the Congress has attempted to project a united front in Punjab, murmurs of dissent and factionalism still continue in the party unit.

On Sunday, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla warned that the style of speaking of party state chief Navjot Singh Sidhu had upset people.

Aujla, the Lok Sabha MP for Amritsar, told ANI that Sidhu had not been among the people in the last five years. “There is displeasure among people towards Sidhu. Being a national leader, in the last five years, he has given less time to them. Moreover, people have also disliked his way of speaking. It is likely to bring him harm [in assembly polls],” Aujla told ANI.

Aujla felt Sidhu had used disrespectful language in public fora. “Sidhu is a big leader. A lot of people look up to him and follow him. He should not use objectionable language against leaders including those of the opposition parties. A big leader should be disciplined in his speech because he has to lead the state and the country,” Aujla said.

Aujla noted Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had to campaign in Amritsar (East) despite Sidhu being a star campaigner for the party in the state.

Aujla felt Sidhu was facing a tough contest in the Amritsar (East) constituency given the triangular fight with Bikram Singh Majithia of the Akali Dal and Jeevan Jyot Kaur of the AAP.
