Soon after it received information about a helicopter crash in Coonoor from local residents on Wednesday, the Nilgiris district police became involved in rescue operations.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat was among the 13 people killed in the crash of the Mi-17 helicopter at Coonoor.

A day after the crash, Tamil Nadu DGP Sylendra Babu held a closed-door meeting with the Nilgiris district police officers, forensic experts and other personnel on the investigation to ascertain the reason for the crash. The Indian Air Force is also investigating the crash.

Later on Thursday, a special investigation team headed by Nilgiris ADSP Muthumanickam was appointed to investigate the crash. The inquiry team has questioned 26 witnesses until Friday, including the local residents and the tourists. Also drones have been deployed by the police investigation team to check for more evidence at the crash site.
