Lakshmi Subramanian and Bhanu Prakash Chandra of THE WEEK have won the prestigious International Press Institute (IPI) India Award for Excellence in Journalism, 2021.

The entry selected was the story on Indians, especially women, who were trapped in refugee camps in the civil war-torn regions of Syria and Iraq. “The team presented the extremely distressing conditions and the immense dangers faced not only by Indians but other refugees,” the IPI said in a statement.

Sreenivasan Jain and Mariyam Alavi of the NDTV have also won the award for exposing the Uttar Pradesh police's legally dubious 'love jihad' cases against inter-faith couples.

The award comprises a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a trophy and a citation to each team.

The selection was made by a jury of editors headed by former Supreme Court judge Madan B. Lokur.
